What Your Shoulders Have Been Carrying (That Has Nothing to Do With Posture)

Sit up straight. Shoulders back. Stop hunching.

 

We have been hearing this our whole lives, and honestly it is excellent advice if the problem is posture. But if your shoulders have been consistently, persistently, stubbornly tight since approximately the mid-2000s and no amount of yoga, massage, hot baths, that foam roller you bought off Amazon and used twice, or stern reminders to sit properly has made the slightest lasting difference, posture is not the problem.

Your shoulders are not tight because you hunch over a computer. Although that won't help and neither will using your smart phone all the time.

 

They are tight because you have been carrying too much for too long. And that is a completely different conversation.

What the Shoulders Actually Store

Of all the places the body holds emotional and energetic weight, the shoulders are probably the most universally understood even by people who have never thought about energy healing in their lives. We already know this intuitively.

We talk about shouldering a burden. We say the weight of the WORLD is on our shoulders. We describe leaving a stressful situation as a WEIGHTLIFTING. These are not random phrases. The body and the language developed together because they are describing the same thing.

 

The shoulders are where we store RESPONSIBILITY.

 

Other people's wellbeing. The emotional safety of the family. The keeping of the peace. The holding of everything together. The being the capable one, the calm one, the one who fixes it, the one who makes sure it all keeps running so nobody else has to worry. The one who, if we are being completely honest, is absolutely exhausted and has been for years.

 

A client of mine, we will call her Sarah, came to me with shoulder tension she had been managing for seven years. Seven. She had tried everything on the conventional list. The physio said her posture was fine. The osteopath helped for a week. Massage helped for a day, maximum two, and then the tension was back, same spot, same intensity, like it had never even taken the afternoon off.

 

In her session we identified that her shoulders were carrying responsibility for her MOTHER'S emotional state, a pattern that had been set up in childhood and had been running quietly in the background ever since. Her mother had been anxious. Sarah had learned, very young, that it was her job to manage that. To be calm so her mother could be calm. To hold the worry so her mother did not have to.

 

Her mother had passed away and had been gone for three years. The pattern was still there, still running, still sitting in the same place in Sarah's body it had always occupied. Loyal to the last, bless it.

 

We cleared it. Her shoulders dropped in the session. She could feel it happen. She rang me a week later to say she had cancelled her next physio appointment because for the first time in seven years she did not need it.

Why Massage Helps for a Day

This is not a criticism of massage. Massage is genuinely wonderful and I recommend it unreservedly. But if you have chronic shoulder tension, you already know what happens: it helps for a day, sometimes two, and then the tension is back. Same spot. Same intensity. Like it boomeranged home and put the kettle on.

That is because massage works at the level of the muscle. And the muscle is not where the problem is.

 

The tension in your shoulders is a physical expression of an energetic load. You can release the muscle every week and it will keep returning, because the energetic pattern generating the tension has not shifted. The body will keep recreating the physical symptom until the underlying cause is addressed.

This was me. I spent a fortune with the massage therapist, the chiropractor (Alex, who jokingly said he wanted to fire me because I kept coming back and wasn’t following his advice), the osteopath and the physiotherapist. We talked about epigenetics in an earlier blog and the science showing that stress and trauma can alter how genes behave across generations. The shoulders are one of the most common places inherited weight shows up.

 

The responsibility your mother carried. The weight her mother carried before her. The women in your family line who held everything together without ever being allowed to put it down, who kept the household running, the peace maintained, the family functioning, across generations, often without ever being asked if they wanted that role. Sound familiar?

 

That weight travels. And it tends to land in the same place in the body that it occupied in the generation before.

 

I have worked with clients whose shoulder tension turned out to have very little to do with their own life and a great deal to do with what their grandmother carried. When we cleared both layers, their own accumulated load and the inherited one underneath, the release was profound in a way that surprised even women who had been doing healing work for years.

 

You have been carrying more than you knew. And none of it has to be permanent.

Notice where they landed. If the answer is roughly where they started, we have found your baseline and it is doing a lot of work. If your ears and your shoulders are still on nodding terms, that is information.

 

That gap between where they were and where they landed is how much tension you were holding without registering it. And that is just the physical layer.
