Self-Care Simplified: Finding Joy in Everyday Moments

Life has a knack for throwing curveballs, doesn't it? We barrel through, tackling challenges head-on, until suddenly, we hit a wall. For me, that wall was menopause. One minute, I was confidently navigating life's twists and turns, and the next, I was an emotional rollercoaster hurtling out of control. Add in a marriage that had run its course, and a relationship I never should have started because there were so many many red flags and warning bells but I chose to ignore them!

And then I found myself at a crossroads. It was time for a change — a change that began with rediscovering the lost art of self-care.

I used to think self-care meant indulging in occasional spa days or escaping on a weekend retreat. But as life unravelled, I realised it's the small, everyday moments that truly matter. So, armed with determination, I embarked on a journey to simplify self-care and find joy in the mundane.

Redefining Self-Care: From Spas to Simple Joys

Gone are the days when self-care meant extravagant spa treatments or jet-setting adventures. Instead, I've come to embrace the beauty of simplicity. Each morning, as the sun peeks through the curtains, I jump out of bed to start my day.

Prayer and meditation practice have taken precedence as they ground me, offering solace amidst life's chaos.

And then there's Samosa, my faithful furry companion. Rain, snow or shine, we embark on our daily walks, soaking in the serenity of nature. Sure, I may grumble on rainy days, but seeing Samosa's dislike for the rain brings a smile to my face. It's these small moments of connection that breathe life into my routine. Did I mention that she sits with me every morning for meditation and prayer? I love that about this pup. She gets an offering after I’m done – a simple grain of puffed rice. Whether she sits for the treat or the quiet, I don’t know but I am forever grateful to my companion.

Navigating Change with Grace (and a Side of Glitter)

Change is inevitable, whether it's navigating menopause or starting anew after a divorce. But amidst the turmoil, I've discovered pockets of peace. Like the gym sessions with my son, where laughter echoes amidst clanking weights. Sure, I may prefer the group classes, but these mother-son workouts have become cherished moments of bonding. He pushes me to my limits and I feel great at the end!

And let's not forget the therapeutic power of a hot shower. As the water cascades over weary muscles, I feel the day's tensions melt away. And just when I think I can't handle any more, I crank the dial to the coldest setting I can handle — a shock to the system, but a reminder that I'm alive and thriving.

Embracing Everyday Moments

Self-care isn't about grand gestures; it's about finding beauty in the everyday. Whether it's decluttering a chaotic space or savouring a homemade meal, these small acts of self-love add colour to life's canvas.

The Small Things in Life INTake, for instance, the simple act of making the bed. In the past, it was a mindless chore, but now it's a moment of mindfulness—a symbolic gesture of starting the day with intention.

That morning cup of chai is my favourite moment. It's the perfect cup, the right temperature, Kenyan blend—a nod to my roots. Every sip is a reminder of home, grounding me in the present moment.

And during the day, I make time to enjoy my tea, selecting from my beautiful collection from Fortnum and Mason's — my one luxury. Every visit home to London is an opportunity to stock up on new blends, a ritual that brings me immense joy. There is something to be said about drinking my tea when it's in any of my favourite teacups and brewed in a teapot. I know it sounds crazy but having my tea in a teacup makes my chai taste so good. Another ritual I picked up growing up in Nairobi and London!

I’ve stopped waiting for special occasions to use my nice things, especially my teacups (I have a few – lol) because life is too short!

I've also discovered the art of sourdough baking. There's something therapeutic about working with the dough—the rhythmic kneading, the anticipation of watching it rise. Some days, my loaves emerge from the oven perfect, while others are a bit wonky. But each loaf is a labour of love, a tangible reminder of my journey towards self-care.

And then there are those unexpected moments of self-discovery, like stumbling upon an art project that needs to be completed or losing myself in a good book. These are the moments that remind me of my inherent worth—that I am deserving of love, even amidst life's storms.

Remember, if your cup is empty or half full, you can't serve others, let alone yourself. So, self-care should never be an afterthought; it's a necessity to survive!

Finding Solace in Simplicity - Conclusion

In a world that glorifies hustle and bustle, it's easy to overlook the power of simplicity. But it's in these quiet moments that we find refuge from the chaos—a sanctuary for the soul.

So, here's to the everyday warriors—the ones who find joy in the mundane and solace in simplicity. May we continue to prioritise self-care, not as an afterthought, but as a fundamental priority of our well-being.

After all, life is a journey—one filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. But amidst it all, there's one constant: the power of self-love. So, let's embrace it—savouring each moment, finding joy in the ordinary, and celebrating the beautifully imperfect journey we call life.
